What a day looks like

Breakfast at the camp, four to six hours riding with a long break for lunch, then the next camp by late afternoon. Evenings are quiet and the food is cooked where you sleep.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 — Kyzart to Kilemche Valley

    Meet in Kyzart village between 12 and 1, and have lunch at a local house with your guide. A short riding demo, then about four hours to Kilemche Valley with a break on the way. Tea when you arrive, and the evening to sit out or walk before dinner.

  2. Day 2 — Kilemche Valley to the north-east shore

    Breakfast around half nine, then over the Jalgyz-Karagai Pass at 3,400 m, stopping at the top for the view. Down to the yurt camp on the north-eastern shore of Song-Kol for lunch, with the afternoon free.

  3. Day 3 — Across to the north-west shore

    A later start: breakfast around nine, then along to the north-western shore. Lunch at the yurt camp, and the rest of the day to explore on foot or take a short ride out.

  4. Day 4 — Back to Kyzart

    Breakfast, then the ride back down to Kyzart village. Lunch at a local house when you arrive.
